Suspect charged with attempted murder after woman struck with car

The Windsor Police Service has charged an American man with attempted murder after a woman was intentionally struck with a vehicle.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on December 23, 2023, officers were called to the area of Riverside Drive West and Ferry Street for a report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located the pedestrian, a 21-year-old woman, who was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver had left the scene before police arrived.

Through investigation, officers determined that the driver, a 23-year-old man, had deliberately hit the victim with his vehicle following a verbal altercation. It was also learned that both parties were involved in an intimate partner relationship and that earlier that day the suspect had allegedly assaulted the victim and kept her against her will.

Officers located and arrested the suspect at a Windsor hospital. Shermere Coulston-Hawkins, of Philadelphia, has been charged with:
  • Attempted murder
  • Assault
  • Assault by choking
  • Forcible confinement
  • Failure to remain at the scene of an accident
