Information and Privacy Unit

The Information & Privacy Unit is responsible for fulfilling the duties assigned under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The Information & Privacy Co-ordinator has been delegated the responsibilities and powers of performing the duties as the “head” within the meaning of the Act.

The Co-ordinator’s duties include responding to requests for records held by the Windsor Police Service relating to assaults, domestic disturbances, neighbour disputes, etcetera. The Co-ordinator also processes requests for records in the possession of the Police Services Board including board resolutions and meeting minutes.

In addition, the Privacy Co-ordinator acts as a consultant to members of the Windsor Police Service in relation to privacy matters.

Requests are received from several different sources such as members of the public, insurance adjusters and law firms. Upon request the Unit provides records to Ministries and government agencies including The Office of the Children’s Lawyer, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board, the Parole Board of Canada and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

In 2012 the Privacy Unit processed 845 access requests and 6 appeals under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
